Random Work Analysis

Welcome to the Random Work Analysis.

N S E W ABCD A B C D

The Random Work Analysis illustrates the criticality of organizational alignment.

In this example, we see the performance vectors of four teams (A, B, C and D) that are not aligned.

We also see the organizational performance resultant (ABCD).

There are four components to consider:

  1. Ideal
  2. Actual
  3. Waste
  4. Work

We can also think of "anti-work", which is measurable in the context of a team, but detracts from the performance of the team (e.g. an own-goal in football).

When alignment is:

  • 100% (0° offset) there is only work.
  • 50% (45° offset) work is matched by waste.
  • 0% (90° offset) there is no work.
  • -50% (135° offset) anti-work is matched by waste.
  • -100% (180°) there is only anti-work.
